Today is National Summer Learning Day, a national advocacy day aimed at elevating the importance of keeping kids learning, safe and healthy every summer, ensuring they return to school in the fall ready to succeed in the year.
I'm posting this after spending the morning and afternoon traveling to learning spaces where I saw young people engaged in collaborative, project-based activities—from STEM learning to performing arts. I trust that these structured out-of-school-time learning experiences do stretch their minds and imaginations, inspiring them to pursue new dimensions of curiosity and scholarship in everyday life.💡 -
Summer learning matters!

"You seem very curious about the world, and you ask lots of questions. This is a wonderful thing. It will make your life very rich." This is what a traveler from France 🇫🇷 said to me as we sat together at a cafe in Barcelona.
Traveling Europe for the past two weeks, I have had the opportunity to interact with, share meals and engage in meaningful dialogue with people from so many different parts of the world. They have come from Israel 🇮🇱, Denmark 🇩🇰, UK 🇬🇧, United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪, Finland 🇫🇮, Spain 🇪🇸, Italy 🇮🇹, Russia 🇷🇺, and many more places. -
These experiences have all been rich opportunities for me to realize (yet again) that no matter where we come from in the 🌎 and how different those places might be from one another, at our core as human beings, we have more similarities than differences. -
The Spatialosophy™ framework and classroom curriculum (launching this fall) promote a society where a range of different human needs, experiences, values and perspectives are recognized and validated. My recent global learning experience in Europe has only deepened my commitment to the work I do as an educator and designer of learning spaces. This includes: working to identify and remove barriers to full participation in society, while simultaneously seeking to create new conditions that promote equity and inclusion. In learning spaces, I see possibilities for such a world 🌎 to exist. —Devan B. / Spatialosophy™

I can't believe that the International Learning Exchange comes to an end today. This past week has gone so quickly!
I'm leaving Rome with so many rich ideas to take back home and apply to my work—both as an educator and as a possibility enthusiast. Looking over the notes I took during the lecture panels and discussions with educators here in Italy, I see that many of these ideas concern developing as a whole person. -
While these ideas were presented to us as ways to enhance the learning experiences of the students we serve, I also see them as reminders of how we can actualize better ways of being/doing/living in our adult lives. -
Here are a few of those ideas that I wanted to share: 💡Our inner growth as human beings must progress as technology does. 💡We must be consistent in the development of our capacities as lifelong learners. 💡As lifelong learners, we must commit to personal and professional development through: formal and informal study, training opportunities, life experience, and interaction with the world around us. 💡We must understand a sense of unity in the world 🌎 and the unity of life. 💡In the Universe, we must see that everything is linked. 💡We must see ourselves as being a scientist of life, whose work is to: explore, think freely, live consciously, learn from all that we experience, and always see possibilities. --db

I landed in Rome on Monday, joined up with the ILE (International Learning Exchange) group—an eclectic mix of over two dozen educators and youth advocates from the U.S.—, and we hit the ground running! -
I snapped this pic of only part of the group—which represents Florida, New York, Tennessee, New Orleans, Illinois, New Mexico, California and more—, as we headed to an inspiring afterschool learning space in the city called Explora Museum (a place I didn't want to leave!). We've also had a panel discussion / meeting of the minds with educators from this country to discuss the similarities and differences that exist between our education systems.
Additionally, we've explored famous landmarks (like The Colosseum, Vatican City, The Sistine Chapel) and had educational tours of the rich and vast history here.
Over 36,000 steps in...and I'm still very excited about the discussions being had and the discoveries being made here. And there's still more to come! -
